Fine-grained particulate matter suspended in the atmosphere or deposited on surfaces, originating from natural processes like wind erosion or volcanic eruptions. These particles are larger than clay but smaller than sand, with diameters ranging from 0.002 to 0.05 millimeters. Atmospheric silt can reduce visibility and contribute to respiratory issues.
