An early name for atmospherics, the crackling radio noise produced by the electromagnetic pulses of lightning and other natural electrical activity in the atmosphere. Radio operators heard it as clicks, grinding and hisses on long and medium wave receivers, and it is also called static. A British Radio Research Board agreement in 1921 favored the term atmospherics over strays.
