Structural stability

The ability of an atmospheric column or layer to resist vertical displacement of air parcels. It relates to how temperature changes with height, determining whether a displaced parcel will return to its original position or continue to move. An atmosphere is structurally stable if a rising parcel becomes cooler and denser than its surroundings.
