Velocity potential
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009968
A scalar function whose negative gradient yields the divergent component of a velocity field. It is particularly useful for analyzing large-scale atmospheric flows, separating the flow into its rotational and divergent parts. The velocity potential is often used in global atmospheric models to diagnose and forecast mass transport.
