Absorbing boundary conditions

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000011

A set of mathematical constraints applied at the edges of a computational grid during numerical modeling of wave propagation, such as in seismic simulation. These conditions are designed to mimic an infinitely large medium by preventing waves from reflecting off the model's artificial boundaries and re-entering the area of interest. One common implementation is the perfectly matched layer (PML), which attenuates outgoing waves in a specially designed zone at the model's edge.
