Air shooting

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000085

A land seismic acquisition technique where the energy source is discharged in the air just above the Earth's surface instead of in a drilled shot hole. This method is employed in environmentally sensitive areas or where surface conditions, such as permafrost or hard rock, make drilling impractical. The resulting downward-traveling shock wave couples with the ground to generate the seismic waves recorded by geophones, though the energy transfer is less efficient than with buried sources.
