Allochthon
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000095
A large mass of rock that has been transported from its original place of formation, often over a considerable distance, by tectonic forces such as thrust faulting. This displaced rock unit rests on an underlying autochthonous unit that remains in its original position. Allochthonous formations are common in fold-and-thrust belts and can complicate subsurface mapping for hydrocarbon exploration.
