Overthrust
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004402
A type of thrust fault with a very low dip angle, where older rock units are pushed over younger ones for a considerable horizontal distance. These large-scale faults are characteristic of compressional tectonic regimes and mountain building. Overthrusts can create complex structural traps for hydrocarbon accumulation.
