Alkalinity test
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004226
A standard chemical titration procedure performed on drilling fluid filtrate to quantify its alkaline content. The test measures the concentrations of hydroxides, carbonates, and bicarbonates by adding a standard acid solution until specific pH endpoints are reached, indicated by color changes of phenolphthalein and methyl orange indicators. Results, reported as milliliters of standard acid per sample volume, are used to calculate the amounts of lime, caustic soda, and bicarbonate contaminants in the mud system.
