Methyl orange

A pH indicator dye used in analytical chemistry, particularly for titrations involving acids and bases. It changes color from red in acidic solutions to yellow in alkaline solutions, with an intermediate orange phase. In drilling fluid analysis, it is used to determine the alkalinity of the mud filtrate, typically indicating the presence of bicarbonate or carbonate ions.
