Angular dispersion
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000120
The variation of wave velocity with direction of travel, as occurs in an anisotropic medium where waves move faster along some paths than others. It leads to a ray velocity that differs from the phase velocity of the wavefront. In a medium with the same velocity in all directions, such as an isotropic homogeneous solid, angular dispersion is absent and ray and phase velocities coincide.
