The undesirable arrival of an injected fluid, such as water or gas, at a producing well, indicating inefficient sweep or channeling within the reservoir. This event often leads to a decrease in oil production and an increase in the water-oil ratio or gas-oil ratio. Early breakthrough can necessitate remedial actions like conformance control.
