Coning
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000814
The upward movement of water or downward movement of gas into a producing wellbore, forming a cone shape in the reservoir fluid interface. This occurs when pressure drawdown during production exceeds the natural forces holding the fluid interfaces stable. Coning reduces oil production by increasing the water-oil ratio or gas-oil ratio, requiring production rate adjustments or remedial work.
