Water coning
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004090
The upward movement of water from an underlying aquifer into the oil or gas production zone, forming a cone shape around the wellbore. This phenomenon occurs when the pressure drawdown during production is too high, causing the water-oil contact to rise unevenly. Water coning can lead to premature water production and reduced hydrocarbon recovery.
