Cresting

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000883

The localized upward movement of water or downward movement of gas into a producing wellbore, similar to coning but often referring to a broader, less symmetrical intrusion. This phenomenon occurs when the pressure gradient created by fluid withdrawal causes the water-oil or gas-oil contact to deform and rise or fall towards the perforations. Cresting can lead to premature water or gas breakthrough, reducing the economic life of the well.
