Bright spot

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000461

A localized high-amplitude seismic reflection anomaly that indicates the possible presence of hydrocarbons. It forms where a low-impedance gas sand is overlain by a higher-impedance shale, creating a strong negative reflection coefficient that appears as a bright event on a seismic section. While a bright spot is a direct hydrocarbon indicator, similar anomalies can also be caused by other lithologies, such as low-density coal seams or brine-filled sands.
