Carrying capacity

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000551

The ability of a drilling fluid to transport drilled solids, or cuttings, from the bottom of the wellbore to the surface. This property is determined by the fluid's velocity in the annulus, its density, and its rheological properties, especially the yield point and low-shear-rate viscosity. Inadequate carrying capacity leads to cuttings beds forming on the low side of deviated wells, which can cause stuck pipe or excessive torque.
