Describing a rock layer that is relatively strong and resistant to flow or deformation under stress. Competent beds, like well-cemented sandstones or massive limestones, tend to fracture or fault when subjected to tectonic forces, rather than folding plastically. In contrast, incompetent layers such as shale or salt will flow and deform, often acting as detachment surfaces that accommodate movement between the more rigid, competent rock units above and below.
