Incompetent
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001962
Describing a rock unit that deforms readily by flow or folding under stress, rather than by fracturing. Incompetent rocks, such as shales and evaporites, tend to flow around more competent units during deformation. This behavior can lead to the formation of ductile seals over hydrocarbon reservoirs.
