An abbreviation for finite difference, a numerical method used to approximate the solutions of differential equations by replacing derivatives with finite differences. In geophysics, it is commonly applied in seismic modeling and migration to simulate wave propagation through complex subsurface structures. The accuracy of the method depends on the grid spacing and the order of the finite difference approximation.
