Gas bearing
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001611
Describing a rock formation or reservoir zone that contains natural gas within its pore spaces. The gas exists as a free phase, not dissolved in oil or water, and is capable of flowing to the wellbore. A formation's gas-bearing potential is confirmed by well logs, which detect low density and high resistivity, and is quantified through production testing.
Relating to a subsurface rock formation that holds accumulations of natural gas. For a zone to be considered gas-bearing, the gas must be present in sufficient quantity and under enough pressure to flow into a wellbore. The presence of gas is identified by wireline logging tools that measure formation properties like density, porosity, and resistivity.
