Threshold velocity

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004474

The minimum fluid velocity required to move a production logging tool's spinner or flowmeter, below which the sensor will not rotate and will register zero flow. This mechanical limitation is a function of the tool's design, bearing friction, and the density and viscosity of the surrounding fluid. The threshold velocity, specified by the tool manufacturer, defines the lower limit of the tool's flow rate measurement capability and is a factor in interpreting logs from low-productivity wells.
