Detectable limit

The lowest concentration or quantity of a substance or signal that an analytical method or instrument can reliably distinguish from background noise. Below this threshold, the presence of the substance or signal cannot be confirmed with statistical confidence. For gas detectors, this limit is often expressed in parts per million (ppm).
