Geopressure
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001687
Subsurface pore fluid pressure that is abnormally high, exceeding the hydrostatic pressure expected for a given depth. Geopressure develops in sealed, rapidly subsiding sedimentary basins where connate water cannot escape as sediments compact, causing the fluid to support part of the overlying rock weight. Drilling into these zones requires careful management of mud weight to prevent a blowout, and they are identified using seismic velocity data or real-time drilling indicators.
