Horizontal transverse isotropy
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001857
A form of seismic anisotropy in which the medium has a horizontal axis of symmetry, so properties are the same in every direction within the vertical plane perpendicular to that axis and different along it. It is typically caused by a set of parallel vertical fractures or microcracks, with the symmetry axis normal to the fracture planes. Velocity and reflection amplitude therefore change with azimuth, which is used to estimate fracture orientation.
