Hydraulic set
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001900
Describing a downhole tool, such as a packer or bridge plug, that is activated and secured in place by applying hydraulic pressure through the tubing or drill pipe. The pressure acts on a piston mechanism within the tool, forcing slips to engage with the casing wall and compressing a sealing element. This method contrasts with mechanically set tools, which are activated by pipe rotation or tension.
Describing a downhole tool or packer that is activated and anchored in place by applying hydraulic pressure from the surface. This pressure acts on a piston or diaphragm within the tool, expanding slips or seals against the casing or wellbore wall. Hydraulic-set tools are often used in deviated or horizontal wells where mechanical setting methods are impractical.
