Hydrophile-lipophile balance number

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001917

A dimensionless value on a scale indicating the degree to which a surfactant is water-soluble (hydrophilic) or oil-soluble (lipophilic). The scale, developed by Griffin, ranges from 0 to 20, where lower numbers denote more lipophilic behavior and higher numbers signify more hydrophilic character. Surfactants with a hydrophile-lipophile balance number from 8 to 18 are good oil-in-water emulsifiers, while those from 3 to 6 are better water-in-oil emulsifiers.
