Lipophilic
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002178
Relating to a substance's tendency to dissolve in or combine with fats, oils, and other nonpolar solvents, also known as oil-wetting. In enhanced oil recovery, the lipophilic portion of a surfactant molecule adsorbs at the oil-water interface, lowering interfacial tension to mobilize trapped oil. Surfactants with a low hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) number, typically below 9, are considered lipophilic.
