Hydrophilic

Describing a substance that has an affinity for water and tends to dissolve in, mix with, or be wetted by water. In drilling fluids, hydrophilic additives are designed to interact with the aqueous phase, such as water-soluble polymers that increase viscosity or reduce fluid loss. Clay minerals like bentonite are naturally hydrophilic.
