Inverse problem
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002029
The process of calculating a model of the Earth's subsurface properties from a set of observed geophysical data. Unlike the forward problem, which predicts data from a known model, inversion starts with the measurements, such as a seismic section, and works backward to find the causal physical parameters, like acoustic impedance. The solution to an inverse problem is non-unique, meaning multiple subsurface models can fit the observed data.
