Mafic
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002249
Describing an igneous rock, magma, or mineral that is rich in magnesium and iron, giving it a characteristically dark color. Mafic rocks like basalt and gabbro have a low silica content, generally between 45 and 52 percent by weight. Because they are associated with oceanic crust and volcanic activity rather than thick continental sedimentary basins, these rocks are not typical hydrocarbon reservoirs or source rocks.
