Principal axis

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002940

One of three mutually perpendicular directions in space used to describe the orientation and magnitude of a directional property like permeability or stress. In an anisotropic reservoir, permeability has different values in different directions, and the principal axes represent the directions of maximum, intermediate, and minimum permeability. The orientation of these axes is determined by the rock fabric and the regional stress field.
