Pseudoplastic
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002984
Describing a non-Newtonian fluid whose viscosity decreases as the rate of shear stress increases, a property also known as shear-thinning. Drilling fluids are engineered to exhibit this behavior, remaining thick under low-flow conditions to suspend cuttings but becoming thin and easily pumpable at the high shear rates experienced inside the drill string. This behavior is quantified by the power-law model, where the flow behavior index 'n' is less than 1 for a pseudoplastic fluid.
