Newtonian fluid

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002537

A fluid whose viscosity remains constant regardless of the shear rate applied. The relationship between shear stress and shear rate is linear and passes through the origin. Water and light oils are examples of Newtonian fluids, though most drilling fluids exhibit non-Newtonian behavior due to their complex compositions.
