Tight oil

Crude oil produced from low-permeability reservoir rocks, such as shale or tight sandstone, that requires hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling for economic extraction. This oil is typically light to medium crude. Major tight oil plays include the Bakken, Eagle Ford, and Permian Basin in the United States.
