Heat-affected zone

Term · Additive manufacturing and 3D printing · MLC-T-ADM-000165

The region of an additively manufactured part that has undergone microstructural changes due to the heat input during the printing process, but without melting. This zone is adjacent to the melt pool in processes like laser powder bed fusion or directed energy deposition. The properties within the heat affected zone can differ from both the melted and unaffected base material.
