Shrinkage compensation

Term · Additive manufacturing and 3D printing · MLC-T-ADM-000349

The practice of intentionally oversizing a 3D model in the design phase to counteract material contraction that occurs during the cooling and solidification stages of additive manufacturing. This adjustment accounts for the volumetric reduction that materials like plastics and metals experience as they transition from a molten or sintered state to a solid. The compensation percentage is specific to the material and process, often ranging from 0.5% to 5% of the original dimension.
