5-hydroxytryptamine
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000023
A monoamine neurotransmitter, also known as serotonin, that is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan. It functions as a chemical messenger in the central nervous system and peripherally in the gastrointestinal tract and blood platelets, influencing mood, appetite, sleep, and memory. Drugs that selectively inhibit its reuptake, known as SSRIs, are widely prescribed for treating depression and anxiety disorders.
