Absorption pathlength

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000081

The distance that light or other electromagnetic radiation travels through a sample in an absorption spectrometer. In the context of the Beer-Lambert law, it is the length of the medium through which the radiation passes, represented by the symbol l or b. For a standard spectrophotometer cuvette, the internal dimension through which the light beam is directed defines the pathlength, which is most frequently 1 centimeter.
