Absorption line
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000080
A dark line or band in an electromagnetic spectrum that indicates the absorption of specific wavelengths of radiation by a substance. This occurs when electrons in atoms or molecules transition to higher energy levels by absorbing photons of characteristic energies. The position and intensity of these lines are unique to each element or molecule, forming the basis of absorption spectroscopy.
