Characteristic line

A specific wavelength or energy of electromagnetic radiation emitted or absorbed by an atom or ion, corresponding to a transition between discrete energy levels. These lines are unique to each element and form the basis of atomic spectroscopy. They are used for qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis.
