Describing the fraction of a chemical or other substance in the environment that an organism can take up from its surroundings through one or more routes of exposure. This concept distinguishes the total amount of a substance present from the portion that is actually available for absorption by the organism. The accessibility of a substance is a key factor in determining its bioavailability and potential toxicity in an ecosystem.
