Acrania

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000154

A congenital malformation characterized by the partial or complete absence of the calvarium, which is the flat, vault-like part of the skull. This severe birth defect leaves the cerebral hemispheres of the brain exposed to the surrounding amniotic fluid, leading to their progressive destruction. Acrania is a lethal condition, often associated with anencephaly, where the brain itself fails to develop properly, and is incompatible with postnatal life.
