Acromegaly
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000157
A slowly progressing endocrine condition of adults in which the pituitary gland secretes too much growth hormone. The excess hormone thickens bone, cartilage and soft tissue, so the hands, feet and facial features gradually enlarge, and complications include joint pain, heart disease and diabetes. When the same hormone excess begins in childhood, before the growth plates close, the result is gigantism instead.
