Agostic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000343
Describing an intramolecular interaction where a hydrogen atom attached to a carbon is bonded simultaneously to both the carbon and a coordinatively unsaturated transition metal center. This creates a three-center, two-electron bond involving the metal, carbon, and hydrogen atoms. The presence of an agostic interaction is identified by specific spectroscopic signatures, such as a lowered C-H stretching frequency in infrared spectroscopy and an upfield shift in the proton NMR spectrum.
