Agostic interaction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000344
A three-center two-electron covalent bond where a hydrogen atom is simultaneously bonded to a carbon atom and a transition metal center. This interaction involves the donation of electron density from a C-H sigma bond to a vacant d-orbital on the metal. The presence of an agostic interaction is characterized by a lengthened C-H bond, a shortened M-H distance, and a reduced C-H stretching frequency in infrared spectroscopy.
