Back donation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001065
The synergistic interaction in coordination compounds where electron density is transferred from a filled metal d-orbital into an empty antibonding pi-orbital of a ligand. This process strengthens the metal-ligand bond by relieving electron density from the metal center. Carbonyl ligands, such as carbon monoxide, are well-known for their ability to participate in back donation.
