Migratory insertion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007382
A fundamental reaction in organometallic chemistry where a ligand, typically an alkyl or aryl group, migrates from the metal center to an adjacent unsaturated ligand, such as carbon monoxide or an alkene. This process results in the formation of a new carbon-carbon bond and a vacant coordination site on the metal. It is a key step in many catalytic cycles, including hydroformylation and polymerization.
