Insertion polymerization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005898
A chain polymerization in which each monomer first coordinates to a metal centre and then inserts into the bond joining the metal to the growing chain, so the chain end stays attached to the metal. It is the mechanism of Ziegler-Natta and metallocene catalysis of olefins. Stereoselective catalysts give isotactic or syndiotactic polypropylene, whereas polyethylene has no stereocentres to control.
