Coordination-insertion polymerization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002563

A specific mechanism of chain growth polymerization where a monomer coordinates to a transition metal center and then inserts into a metal-alkyl or metal-hydride bond. This process is characteristic of Ziegler-Natta and metallocene catalysis, where the metal acts as a template for monomer addition. The stereochemistry of the resulting polymer can be precisely controlled by the catalyst structure.
